3 Amazing Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Are your gums sensitive, and do they bleed a little when you brush or floss? Have you noticed your gum line slowly rising, exposing your tooth roots? Are you scared of periodontal treatment because it sounds scary and uncomfortable?

At Lancaster Dental Care Associates in Lancaster, California, Dr. Kamran Saidara and his team use laser dentistry to make treating periodontal disease more comfortable for you, helping you avoid the looming threat of tooth loss from gum disease.

Gum (periodontal) disease

Part of dentistry is periodontal care (gum care). When your gums get irritated and inflamed, it’s called gingivitis, which is the first stage of periodontal disease. If treated, gum disease can be reversed, but untreated, it progresses to the point that your gums recede and your tooth can loosen and fall out.

Treating gum disease starts with making sure you make and keep your biannual teeth cleaning and exam appointments. You can help protect your gum health by following a robust at-home oral hygiene regimen. If you already have gum disease, you may need a deep teeth cleaning that gets under the gums and scales away tartar.

We’ll do an examination to see if you have inflamed or infected gums and to see if tartar is present below your gum line. Any diseased gum tissue will need to be eliminated. We use laser periodontal treatment, also known as laser dentistry, to make the process as easy, fast, and painless as possible.

How laser dentistry works

First, we apply a numbing gel to keep you comfortable. We then use a safe, gentle laser to carefully isolate and eliminate diseased gum tissue. The process only takes a minute or so per tooth.

Once we’ve removed the sick gum tissue, we can get under your gum line to scrape away tartar (a process known as scaling). Then we smooth the root of your tooth to make it harder for bacterial plaque to take hold.

3 benefits of laser dentistry

There are a lot of reasons to use a laser when performing periodontal dental work. Here are three:

1. Minimized bleeding and no sutures

Formerly, dentists had to cut away diseased tissue with a scalpel and stitch the gums closed. Our handheld laser vaporizes the unwanted gum tissue and cauterizes the gum in one step. This means you won’t have to deal with sutures or excessive bleeding after your periodontal treatment.

2. No need for general anesthesia

Many people have so much anxiety over dental procedures that they need general anesthesia. Traditional gum surgery and stitching almost always require the patient to be “put under.” With laser dentistry, the process is so minimally invasive that most of our patients feel comfortable enough to stay awake the entire time.

3. Faster post-treatment recovery

As you can imagine, laser dentistry patients recover quickly compared to those who have traditional periodontal surgery. Since there’s no “cutting” and no suturing, there’s less swelling so your gums quickly recover and start regenerating lost tissue. It’s definitely a win-win situation.
